Background: Japan's drive to improve relations with African countries continued this week, when Zambian Foreign Minister Vernon Johnson Mwaanga arrived for three days as the guest of the Japanese government.

Among the most important topics discussed was the effect of recent Japanese policy on copper sales had lowered prices and disturbed the world market, leading to great difficulties for Zambia.

During talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Kiichi Miyazawa, Mr. Mwaanga said that before Japan exported copper products it should consult the inter-governmental council of copper exporting countries.

Trade was also discussed. In 1973, Japan send over 8.5 per cent of total exports to Africa. But only 4.6 per cent of its imports came from African countries.
