  • Description

GBP30,000 worth of pedigree British livestock was pushed, pulled and coaxed aboard a freighter plane at Southern Airport, Nov. 25, bound for Russia. The scene was a modern-day Noah's Ark episode.

The passengers included top-strain bulls, rams and 20 sheep-dogs. The Russians want them for producing new strains on Soviet farms.

Mr. Howard Surch, a Reading farmer, will accompany the animals for most of their journey. The air voyage ends at Rotterdam where they will be transhipped to rail trucks. Next stop will be the Czech border, where Mr. Surch will leave the train. The animals' destination is Cop, just inside the Soviet border.

Before they were loaded aboard the plane, Russian specialists examined each animal to make sure it was up to standard.
