Background: On the sixth day of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships (Saturday 1 July) Virginia Wade of Britain won her way to the Quarter-finale with a convincing win over Helen Gourlay of Australia 6-3, 6-2. It was only the second time in eleven years Miss Wade had managed to progress as far at Wimbledon.
Number Two men's seed, Ilie Nastase of Rumania, also had an impressive centre-court win over Tom Gorman of the United States, who provided him with some stiff competition. The result, 6-3, 3-6, 8-6, 6-1. Nastase will meet the young American Jim Connors in the Quarter-finals.
SYNOPSIS: Virginia Wade of Britain serves to Helen Gourlay of Tasmania, Australia, on the sixth day of the Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon on Saturday. At this stage they were half-way through their match.
After taking the first set 6-3, Miss Wade raced to 6-3, Miss Wade raced to 5-2 in the second set. This time she prepares to serve for the match.
It was only the second time in eleven years Miss Wade had reached the Wimbaledon Quarter-finals. In them she will meet Mrs Billie-Jean King of the United States.
Also on the centre-court on Saturday, a fine match between number-two seed, Ilie Nastase of Rumania, and Tom German of the United States. Nastase has service at the far end. German provided stiff opposition and most rallies were very hard fought.
Nastase finally best German 6-3, 3-6, 8-6, 6-1. He goes on to meet Jim Canners of the United States in the Quarter-finals.
