  • Description

AUSTRALIAN TENNIS CHAMPION, MARGARET SMITH, TODAY (SUNDAY) COMPLETED THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST HARDCOURT DOUBLE WHEN SHE WON THE FRENCH WOMEN'S SINGLES TITLE AT THE ROLAND GARROS STADIUM IN PARIS.

SHE DEFEATED THE FORMER WIMBLEDON CHAMPION, MARIA BUENO, OF BRAZIL, IN THREE SETS 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, IN ONE HOUR AND 27 MINUTES.

MISS SMITH, LAST YEAR'S WIMBLEDON CHAMPION, BEGAN TENTATIVELY AND HAD HER SERVICE BROKEN IN THE SEVENTH GAME OF THE FIRST SET. SHE LEVELLED THE SCORE AT 5 ALL, BUT LOST THE INITIATIVE AND WENT DOWN 5-7 TO THE BRAZILIAN.

WITH THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL WOMEN STROKE PLAYERS IN OPPOSITION, RALLIES WERE FEW AS EACH HIT BOLDLY FOR THEIR SHOTS.

IN THE SECOND SET, MISS SMITH TOOK THE INITIATIVE AND WITH ALMOST RUTHLESS DETERMINATION COMPLETELY DOMINATED THE PATTERN OF PLAY AND SWEPT TO A 6-1 VICTORY IN 19 MINUTES.

THE FINAL SET SAW HONOURS EVEN TO THE FOURTH GAME, BUT AFTER THAT THE AUSTRALIAN PLAYER AGAIN TOOK COMMAND AND WON THE NEXT FOUR GAMES TO COMPLETE HER TRIUMPH.

MISS SMITH, WHO WON THE ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP EARLIER THIS MONTH, IS NOW WELL ON THE WAY TO BECOMING THE FIRST WOMAN IN HISTORY TO WIN THE WORLD'S TOP FIVE WOMEN'S TITLES IN ONE YEAR -- AUSTRALIAN, ITALIAN, FRENCH, WIMBLEDON AND UNITED STATES.

HER VICTORY OVE MISS BUENO, THE 1959 AND 1960 WIMBLEDON CHAMPION, AVENGED THE DEFEAT SHE SUFFERED AT THE HANDS OF THE BRAZILIAN CHAMPION IN THE FINAL OF THE UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP AT FOREST HILLS LAST SEPTEMBER.
