Background: Ireland's Industry and Commerce Minister, Sean F. Lemass, pressed a button, October 15, to set in motion the machinery of the largest and most modern copper mine in Western Europe, at Avoca, county Wicklow, about 45 miles from Dublin.

The giant copper works as St. Patrick's Copper Mine Ltd, leased to a Canadian mining concern by Irish Government concession, are geared to handle 4,000 tons of ore a day.

To date a total of GBP3M has been spent on developing the mine. The scheme includes a mill to crush, process and concentrate the daily output. In addition the company has built fully-equipped workshops, a changing house for the miners, engineering offices, a hostel for 40 men and 12 staff houses
Development work provided direct employment for 500 workers. When the mines are in full production between 400 and 500 men will be permanently employed.

To handle the export of the copper and pyrite concentrates, the harbour at Arklow, about six miles from the mine, has been improved, in collaboration with the Irish Government and the harbour commissioners, to accommodate ships of 1,000 tons.

The concentrates will be exported for sale on the open world market. They have an annual export potential of GBP2,700,00.

The mine is being operated by Irish Copper Mines, Ltd., a Canadian incorporated company and a subsidiary of the Canadian Consolidated Mogul Mines, Ltd.,
Many Canadians were present at the opening ceremony, which was also attended by Mr. Alfred Rive, Canadian Ambassador to Ireland.
