Background: Crippled as a result of an accident when he fell from a roof while helping to build houses for refugees in Austria, a young English volunteer worker, 27-year-old David Hoggett, of Cheltenham, has received the United Nations Nansen medal for distinguished service on behalf of refugees.

Major General Lyne, Joint President of the United Nations Association of Great Britain accepted the medal on behalf of David who could not be in Geneva for the ceremony in the Palais de Nations. The award was made by Dr. Lindt, High Commissioner for Refugees. On the medal are the words, in Norwegian, Love of Man is practical Policy.

David himself, paralysed from the waist down, spent the day, like every other day during the last two years, at his home, unable to move, in his wheelchair in front of the window from where he can see the local church and his garden.

It was in the same room, a few days after the ceremony, that Major General Lyne handed over the medal to David.

David's mother was present when he received the medal and the scroll of honour.

Another visitor was British volunteer worker, Miss Bacon, who brought flowers and a message from the family now living in the house which David helped to build.

By being awarded the medal, which is named after Dr. Fridtjof Nansen, first League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, David follows in the footsteps of Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Queen Juliana of the Netherlands.
