  • Description

When the Royal Air Force handed over Wahn Airport to the German authorities on Thursday, July 18, the official ceremony was run on strictly interservice lines between the RAF and new Luftwaffe.

But the development of the airport will be handled jointly by the Luftwaffe and Lufthansa - the German civil airline company.

At Thursday's take-over parade, Major General Plocher, chief of staff of the German Air Force, accepted all military installations, while Dr. Schiller, representing the Federal Ministry of Transport, accepted the runways and civil buildings.

The airfield will now be used as a civil airport, although a unit of the German Air Force will also be stationed there.

Steel-helmeted German airmen and men of the RAF paraded to see Air Vice-Marshal Hogan hand control of the airfield to the German authorities, and to see the RAF standard give way to the Federal German Flag on the station flagstaff.

British Meteor jet aircraft were still standing on the airfield during the ceremony.
