    TROOPS OF THE FIRST BATTALION, THE WELCH REGIMENT, TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BEGAN PREPARATIONS FOR THEIR DEPARTURE FOR GHANA NEXT MONTH, WHERE THEY WILL TAKE PART IN TRAINING EXERCISES WITH GHANAIAN TROOPS. IT WILL BE THE FIRST BRITISH INFANTRY BATTALION TO SET FOOT IN THE COUNTRY SINCE THE TURN OF THE CENTURY.

    THE 300-STRONG CONTINGENT WILL FLY OUT TO GHANA IN HERCULES AIRCRAFT OF RAF AIR SUPPORT COMMAND. THE 3-THOUSAND MILES FLIGHT WILL TAKE THEM ABOUT TEN HOURS.

    THE AIRCRAFT WILL RETURN WITH UNITS OF GHANAIAN INFANTRY, WHO WILL TAKE PART IN EXERCISES IN THIS COUNTRY.

    THE BRITISH TROOPS TODAY WERE FITTED OUT WITH JUNGLE GREEN UNIFORMS THEY WILL WEAR IN THEIR EXERCISE, CODE-NAMED "EXERCISE ATTRACT". IT IS DESIGNED TO TRAIN THE UNIT IN AIR-TRANSPORTED MOVE, AND TO OPERATE IN UNFAMILIAR COUNTRY WITH UNITS OF THE GHANA ARMY.

    THE WELCH COMPANIES WILL ALSO ACT AS ENEMY TO GHANA BATTALIONS DURING PARTS OF THE EXERCISE.

    A SEVENTY-STRONG ADVANCE PARTY FROM THE REGIMENT WILL LEAVE NEXT WEDNESDAY, AND THE MAIN FORCE THREE WEEKS LATER.
