  • Description

A first half penalty gave Albania a 1-0 win over Finland in their Group Four World Cup Qualifying Game in Tirana, Albania, on October 10.

But although both sides produced top quality football, neither will appear in the 1974 finals. The win gave Albania its first points in the qualifying round but failed to lift them from the bottom of the four team table.

For Finland, the tournament continued on Sunday (Oct. 14) with a game in Rumania, when they suffered an overwhelming 9-0 defeat.

This leaves Rumania and East Germany equal leaders with nine points. East Germany also has one more game to play, against Albania on November 3. If the East Germans win or draw this game, their place in the 1974 Final Series is assured. If they lose then the Rumanians are almost certain to go into the final rounds on goal average.

The fast, clean game between Albania and Finland was marred by only one incident -- in the first half an Albanian forward was pulled down by a Finnish defender, and Albania scored on the penalty.

SYNOPSIS: Albania kicks off to start the Group Four World Cup Qualifying Game against visiting Finland in Tirana.

The first half penalty was taken by Albania, giving her the first and only goal of the game.

Although both sides played top quality football to entertain the capacity crowd, neither will appear in the 1974 finals. The win gave Albania its first points in the qualifying round but failed to lift them from the bottom of the four team table.

For Finland, the tournament continued on October the fourteenth with a further game in Rumania when they suffered an over whelming 9-0 defeat. This leaves Rumania and East Germany equal leaders with nine points and one game to play -- between East Germany and Albania on November the third.

In the Albania-Finland game, both sides kept playing fast and open football. Outstanding saves by both goalkeepers stopped further scoring before Albania -- who kept up their attack -- finally ran out narrow winners.
