Getting rid of old junk is many a householder's problem - and it seems that a number of Londoners solved ti in their own discreet way. a gigantic tangle of rusting bicycles, discarded prams, handcarts, car tyres, water tanks, wheels, oil drums and gas cookers came to light, when the disused Surrey Canal Basin at Camberwell, London, was drained May 25.
It was estimated that about 400 lorry loads of junk had been thrown into the canal basin since the last barge sailed out fifteen years ago. Now this part of the canal is to be filled in as an extension to an adjacent park. Somebody will have to find a new dumping ground, it would appear.
The unpleasant work of clearing the rubbish will take weeks to complete. Optimistic workmen say they expect to find some valuable objects when sorting through the mud covered refuse.
