  • Description

A SCOTTISH STUDENT, MR. NORMAN STONE AND AN AUSTRALIAN TEACHER, MISS JANICE WILSON WERE SENTENCED TO DEPORTATION FROM CZECHOSLOVAKIA AFTER BEING FOUND GUILTY BY A BRATISLAVA COURT OF TRYING TO SMUGGLE A PERSON ACROSS THE CZECHOSLOVAK BORDER. TWO OTHERS APPEARING WITH THEM, ANDREA WALDER AND TIBOR KARMAN, WERE SENTENCED TO SIX MONTHS IMPRISONMENT TO BE FOLLOWED BY DEPORTATION.

WALDER, STONE AND WILSON WERE ALLEGED TO HAVE TRIED TO SMUGGLE KARMAN INTO AUSTRIA. KARMAN WHO WAS THE FIRST DEFENDANT TO BE EXAMINED SAID HE HAD PLANNED TO MARRY MISS WALDER AND DENIED THAT THEY PLANNED HIS ILLEGAL FLIGHT INTO AUSTRIA. HE SAID THE DECISION WAS "SPONTANEOUS".

MR. STONE AND MISS WILSON WERE GREETED AFTER THE TRIAL AT A BRATISLAVA HOTEL BY A GROUP OF PHOTOGRAPHERS AND NEWSMEN AND BY MR. STONE'S MOTHER. MR. STONE'S MOTHER HAD FLOWN TO CZECHOSLOVAKIA WITH MONEY SO THAT HER SON AND MISS WILSON COULD RETURN HOME. THE TWO WERE FREED AFTER THE REGIONAL COURT OF APPEAL REJECTED THE PROSECUTION'S DEMAND FOR A SEVERER SENTENCE AGAINST THEM.
