Background: Jerez was the site of the recent Sherry Festival in Spain. The manufacture of Sherry in Jerez is an ancient art. The Romans exported the wine from the area in 11 A.D. and the British became the first big importers of Sherry in the 17th century. Each September for the past 24 year a festival has been held to celebrate the tradition of winemaking. Included in the events are the election of a Sherry Queen, parades and the blessing of grapes and wine. Against this background of a proud and noble past, the festivities at Jerez continue as an affirmation of the ancient art of winemaking.
