  • Description

The Khmer Minister for Education Keo Sangkim and one of his senior aides were killed on Tuesday (4 June) as military police stormed a school in Phnom Penh, where they were being held hostage. The incident was the climax of months of anti-Government protests by students and teachers.

The two men were kidnapped from their offices at the Education Ministry, apparently with the intention of using them to secure the release of 15 students and four teachers, detained for alleged subversion. The 19 people were arrested after a strike for higher wages.

More than 30 students and police were wounded in the riot. Two of the students died in hospital on Tuesday night. Another 100 wee arrested by the police.

The authorities say at least a thousand students barricaded themselves inside the school. They met the military police advance with a barrage of stones and bricks. Police sources said the Minister and his adviser Thach Chea were first stabbed, then shot. The Minister was already dead when police took control of the school. Mr. Chea died on his way to hospital.

Prime Minister long Boret declared three days of mourning for the two dead officials. He said they had been "tortured and killed" by Communist agents.
