  • Description

HEAVY SEASONAL RAIN IN NORTHERN ZAMBIA IS INCREASING THE HAZARDS TO PETROL CONVOYS USING THE ROUGH, UN-METALLED GREAT NORTH ROAD -- KNOWN AS THE HELL RUN -- WHICH LINKS LAND-LOCKED ZAMBIA WITH THE INDIAN OCEAN PORT OF DAR ES SALAAM IN TANZANIA. THE ROAD IS ONE OF ZAMBIA'S MAIN FUEL SUPPLY LINES BUT AS THE RAINS TURN THE ROAD INTO LITTLE MORE THAN A MUD-TRACK, MORE AND MORE TRUCKS, LOADED WITH PRECIOUS PETROL, ARE BEING WRECKED.

SINCE RHODESIA DECLARED UDI, ZAMBIA HAS LARGELY RELIED ONON ROAD TRANSPORT TO BRING IN PETROL SUPPLIES, AND THE PRINCIPAL ROUTE IS THE GREAT NORTH ROAD, FROM LUSAKA TO DAR ES SALAAM, 1,200 MILES IN ALL.

TRUCK DRIVERS HAVE CALLED THE BUMPY, UNSURFACED ROAD 'HELL RUN' BECAUSE OF THE HEAVY TOLL OF VEHICLES. NOW, SEASONAL RAINS HAVE INCREASED THE HAZARDS -- AND THE NUMBER OF WRECKS LITTERING THE ROAD.
