  • Description

GORDON SEATED AT NEWS CONFERENCE AND SPEAKING (SOF)

TRANSCRIPT: GORDON: "MY FAMILY AND I WERE ARRESTED ON THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER 1967, JUST TWO DAYS AFTER WE HAD TRIED TO SMUGGLE OUT OF CHINA SOME STUFF WHICH I WANTED FOR A BOOK. I WAS GOING TO WRITE ON CHINA. AFTER WE WERE ARRESTED, WE WERE KEPT IN THE HSIN CHIAO HOTEL AND WE STAYED THERE THE WHOLE TIME. LADY FRIDAY, MY WIFE AND I WERE BROUGHT BEFORE SECURITY OFFICIALS AND TOLD THAT WE HAD ... I HAD ... INSULTED, SLANDERED AND ATTACKED CHAIRMAN MAO AND HAD ATTEMPTED ILLEGALLY TO TAKE OUT OF CHINA POLITICAL INFORMATION, BUT AS I HAD SHOWN REPENTANCE, FOR MY ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES, AND AS CHAIRMAN MAO'S POLICY IS LENIENCY TOWARDS THOSE WHO SHOW REPENTANCE, WE WOULD BE REPORTED. THAT WAS ON FRIDAY NIGHT. AND ON SUNDAY, THEY TOLD ME WE WERE LEAVING. WE LEFT PEKING ON MONDAY MORNING, BY AIR, TO CANTON. STAYED OVERNIGHT AT CANTON AND THEN, A MOST WONDERFUL MOMENT, WE WERE ALLOWED TO LEAVE CANTON AND COME HERE. I DON'T KNOW, ALL I WANT TO SAY IS I'M NOT USED TO BEING .. AND MY FAMILY ARE NOT USED TO BEING FREE, AND I STILL DON'T THINK IT'S HAPPENING. WE DREAMED OF THIS MOMENT FOR TWO YEARS. IT ALL SEEMS VERY UNREAL. I FIND IT UNBELIEVABLE. I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND. I DON'T WANT TO SPEND TOO MUCH TIME. I DON'T THINK I EVER WANT TO LEAVE ENGLAND AGAIN, QUITE HONESTLY. MY VIEWS OF ENGLAND HAVE CHANGED."

    QUESTION: "IN WHAT WAY?"

GORDON: "I JUST LOVE ENGLAND, AND I WANT TO GO BACK."
