    A 19TH CENTURY FRENCH JESUIT MISSIONARY, FATHER JACQUES BERTHIEU, WHO WAS SHOT TO DEATH IN MADAGASCAR IN 1896, WAS BEATIFIED IN CEREMONIES AT ST. PETER'S CATHEDRAL, VATICAN CITY, TODAY (SUNDAY).

    THE CEREMONY WAS ATTENDED BY DESCENDANTS OF THE SO-CALLED REBEL RED BAND WHO SLEW THE MISSIONARY, AND BY MADAGASCANS HE CONVERTED TO CHRISTIANITY.

    AFTER THE SHOOTING, THE BODY OF FATHER JACQUES BERTHIEU WAS THROWN TO CROCODILES.

    BECAUSE NOTHING REMAINED OF HIS BODY, ONE OF THE BEADS OF HIS ROSARY WAS PLACED IN THE RELIQUARY WHERE FRAGMENTS OF THE BONES OF A BEATIFIED PERSON ARE USUALLY KEPT.

    FATHER BERTHIEU WAS BORN IN NOVEMBER, 1934, AT MONLOGIS, IN THE DIOCESE OF SAINT FLOUR.

    HIS WAS THE FIRST BEATIFICATION DURING THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL SESSION.
