  • Description

JIM CLARK, THE BRITISH RACING-DRIVER, WON THE WORLD DRIVER'S CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE SECOND TIME WHEN HIS CAR CROSSED THE LINE FIRST IN THE GERMAN PRIX AT NURBURGRING TODAY (SUNDAY).

RECORD AFTER RECORD WENT DOWN DURING THE RACE. CLARK FIRST BROKE THE TIME FOR THE STANDING START LAP; THEN HE BEAT THE LAP RECORD FOUR TIMES; HE BECAME THE FIRST MAN TO SET AN OFFICIAL 100 MPH LAP TIME.

A CROWD OF 300,000 WATCHED CLARK STREAK INTO THE LEAD FROM THE START AND REMAIN THERE THROUGHOUT THE RACE. HIS ONLY SERIOUS CHALLENGER WAS AN OLD RIVAL, GRAHAM HILL, WHO FINISHED SECOND, 16 SECONDS BEHIND.

CLARK'S GREEN LOTUS WAS NOT CHALLENGED SERIOUSLY THROUGHOUT THE 15 LAPS OF 212 MILES (352.15 KILOMETRES) RACE. AFTERWARDS, CLARK SAID THAT THERE HAD BEEN A LITTLE TROUBLE WITH THE CAR AT THE START, DUE PRINCIPALLY TO THE HEAVY FUEL LOAD, BUT THEN ALL HAD GONE ACCORDING TO PLAN.

ASKED ABOUT RETIREMENT, CLARK SAID THAT HE WILL NOW THINK MORE ABOUT HIS SCOTTISH FARM BUT WILL NOT GIVE UP RACING IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. THERE HAS BEEN SOME DISCUSSION OVER THE POSSIBLE WITHDRAWAL FROM GRAND PRIX RACING OF THE LOTUS MARQUE.
