IN SOUTH AFRICA AS THE GUEST OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF STUDENTS IS SENATOR ROBERT KENNEDY OF NEW YORK.

  • Description

AIRPORT ARRIVAL, KENNEDY CARRIED BY STUDENTS, HECKLING INCIDENTS, AND KENNEDY SPEAKING, STUDENTS SINGING - SOF THROUGHOUT.

"WE ARE DELIGHTED TO SEE ALL OF YOU AND WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR WARM RECEPTION. AND I AM PARTICULARLY DELIGHTED THAT, AS IN MY OWN COUNTRY, THERE IS A DIVERGENT POINT OF VIEW. I AM PARTICULARLY DELIGHTED TO BE ABLE TO EXPRESS IT AND I AM DELIGHTED THAT YOU HAVE THE CHANCE AND OPPORTUNITY TO WRITE THE SIGN 'YANKEE GO HOME.' LET ME SAY, THAT MANY TIMES, IN MY OWN COUNTRY, IN THE UNITED STATES, I HAVE SEEN MUCH WORSE SIGNS. AND I AM GLAD THAT THOSE OF YOU WHO WELCOME OUR VISIT TODAY AT LEAST OUTNUMBER THOSE WHO OPPOSE IT.

"SO I COME HERE TO SOUTH AFRICA TO EXCHANGE VIEWS WITH YOU. I COME HERE TO HEAR FROM ALL SEGMENTS OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN THOUGHT AND OPINION. I COME HERE TO LEARN WHAT WE CAN DO TOGETHER TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF OUR TIME, TO DO AS THE GREEKS ONCE WROTE: 'TO TAME THE SAVAGENESS OF MAN AND MAKE GENTLE THE LIFE OF THE WORLD.'

"...FOR IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS, AS PRESIDENT KENNEDY ONCE SAID, 'OUR MOST BASIC COMMON LINK IS THAT WE ALL INHABIT THE SAME PLANET. WE ALL BREATHE THE SAME AIR, WE ALL CHERISH OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE, AND WE ARE ALL MORTAL.'
