In Cairo on Saturday, the Arab Socialist Union Secretary for Women, Doctor ??? Abou Seoud welcomed Mrs. ??? Al Sadat -- wife of Egypt's President anwar Sadat -- to the opening of a major seminar on the role of women in the Moslem world.

Delegates from many Moslem states and Arab womens' organisations are attending the three-day conference in the Egyptian capital. With Mrs. Sadat as its president, the seminar will discuss some one hundred papers dealing with Moslem women in their historical, religious, economic and current social context.

Mrs. Sadat has played a significant role in efforts to lift restrictions on the social and public lives of women in Egypt and other Arab States. She was praised for her work by Doctor Souad. Her attitudes have prompted a number of Egyptian women to abandon the traditional purdah and to involve themselves actively in politics and social affairs.

The Egyptian Minister for Moslem Affairs, Doctor Mohammed Hassan el-Zahaby outlined the seminar's programme. It includes the Moslem attitude to the family and mother-hood, the role of women in building early Islamic society and women as reflected in the Moslem holy book, the Koran.

Background: Mrs. Jehan Al Sadat, wife of Egypt's President Anwar Sadat, presided over the opening of a seminar to discuss the role of women in the Moslem world in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Saturday (20 December).

The Egyptian Minister of Social Affairs, Dr. Aisha Ratib, the Minister for Moslem Affairs. Dr. Mohamed Hassan el-Zahaby and the Arab Socialist Union (A.S.U.) Secretary for women Dr. Souad Abou Seoud also attended the first day of the meeting, along with a number of top officials from other Moslem nations, and Arab womens' organisations.

During the three-day seminar, the delegates will discuss some 100 papers dealing with the role of women in building Islamic society, the Moslem attitude towards the family and the role of mothers, and the situation of women as seen in the Moslem holy book, the Koran.

Mrs. Sadat has played a significant role in efforts to lift restrictions on the social and public positions of women in Egypt and throughout the Arab world. Her attitudes have prompted a number of Egyptian women to drop the traditional all-covering robes and yashmak of purdah, and have encouraged Egyptian families to regard the education of daughters with the same enthusiasm formerly reserved for sons alone.

The seminar is the first of its kind to be held in Cairo's International Islamic Centre for Population Studies and Research -- a section of the capital's Al Azhar University. The theme of women and their role was chosen to coincide with the ending of International Womens Year.
