    THOUSANDS OF PILGRIMS FROM ALL OVER INDIA POURED INTO SRAVANABELUGOLA ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY FOR THE CLOSING STAGES OF THE GREAT HEAD ANOINTING CEREMONY OF GOMATESVARA, OR, MAHAMASTHAKABHISHEKA. THIS PRINCIPALLY JAIN FESTIVAL IS PERFORMED AT INTERVALS OF TEN TO TWELVE YEARS.

    THE EARLIEST MAHAMASTHAKABHISHEKA ON RECORD TOOK PLACE IN 1398 A.D. THE FESTIVAL LASTS FOR ABOUT A FORTNIGHT DURING WHICH THE TIME VARIOUS OTHER RELIGIOUS FUNCTIONS ARE HELD.

    A SPECIAL SCAFFOLDING IS CREATED BEHIND THE STATUE OF GOMATESVARA TO ENABLE THE PRIESTS TO POUR THE VARIOUS INGREDIENTS REPRESENTING THE ANOINTMENT. THESE INCLUDE DATES, POPPY SEED, MILK, GOLD FLOWERS AND SILVER COINS. THE STATUE STANDS ON TOP OF A HILL 3,347 FEET (ABOUT 1,000 METRES) ABOVE SEA LEVEL, AND IS CARVED OUT OF GRANITE. THE PEDESTAL ON WHICH IT STANDS IS DESIGNED AS AN OPEN LOTUS FLOWER. WITH A TOTAL HEIGHT OF 58 FEET (ABOUT 20 METRES) IT IS CLAIMED TO BE THE LARGEST MONOLITH IN THE WORLD.

    ACCORDING TO THE TRADITIONAL ACCOUNT, GOMATESVARA WAS THE YOUNGEST OF TWO BROTHERS. IN A STRUGGLE FOR THE EMPIRE BETWEEN THEM HE WON, BUT HANDED OVER THE KINGDOM TO HIS DEFEATED ELDER BROTHER AND RETIRED FROM THE WORLD TO DO PENANCE.
