  • Description

There were angry scenes in the West Bank town of Hebron on Sunday (26 February) when a group of Jewish militants tried to occupy a historic abandoned ruin.

SYNOPSIS: There were about 50 of the militants who made the attempt.

But Israeli soldiers, warned about the occupation moves, were at the house waiting. No one has lived in the building since it was gutted by a fire during disturbances in the town in 1929, in which the Jewish community there was massacred. And as the militants tried to get in the soldiers moved in to carry them away. One of the militants, Rabbi Meir Kahane, was detained after the struggles.

Rabbi Kahane, a former leader of extremist American Jewish Defence League, had announced his intention of returning the building to the Jewish people. But the soldiers dragged him away from the house and he was driven to the Israeli Authority headquarters. He was later sent back to Jerusalem to be released. Other demonstrators were manhandled into a lorry and they too were taken back to Jerusalem to be released.

Soldiers barred the way to the house, which is situated in the centre of Hebron. It is a biblical town, site of the tomb of the patriarchs and was captured from Jordan during the 1967 war.
