THE NEGRO VOTER REGISTRATION OFFICE WAS SET UP IN GREENWOOD TO ENCOURAGE MORE NEGROES IN THE AREA TO REGISTER AND VOTE.IN MANY AREAS OF THE DEEP SOUTH...LARGE NUMBERS OF NEGROES DO NOT VOTE..EITHER BECAUSE OF LOCAL RESTRICTIONS AIMED DIRECTLY AT NEGROES OR BECAUSE OF INTIMIDATION AND FEAR SPREAD BY WHITE SUPREMISTS.

AN OFFICER OF THE STUDENT NON-VIOLENT CO-ORDINATION COMMITTEE SAID MANY OF THE GROUP'S VOTER REGISTRATION RECORDS WERE DESTROYED IN THE BLAZE.POLICE SAID THE DAMAGE WAS MINOR.WITNESSES SAID THEY SAW TWO WHITE MEN RUNNING FROM THE BUILDING JUST BEFORE THE FIRE STARTED.
