    A WEST GERMAN WAR CRIMES COURT IN MUNICH YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) ACQUITTED FOURTEEN MIDDLE-AGED WOMEN FOR THEIR PART IN ALLEGED NAZI MERCY KILLING PROGRAMMES.SEVERAL OF THE WOMEN, KNOWN AS 'SISTERS OF MERCY', WEPT AS THE VERDICT, ACCORDING TO WHICH THEY WERE NOT GUILTY IN LAW WAS GIVEN.

    THE PRESIDING JUDGE SAID THAT THE ACCUSED WERE INTELLECTUALLY UNQUALIFIED, AND HAD NOT ACTED ON THEIR OWN INITIATIVE.HE ADDED THAT THEY WERE THUS NOT AWARE THAT THEIR ACTIONS WERE CRIMINAL.THE JUDGE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE KILLINGS WERE THE DOCTORS IN CHARGE.

    CHARGES AGAINST THE WOMEN AROSE OUT OF ALLEGED KILLINGS OF BETWEEN ONE TO 150 MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE AT A MENTAL HOSPITAL AT OBRAWALDE, IN POMERANIA, IN NORTH EASTERN GERMANY BETWEEN 1942 AND 1945.THE JUDGEMENT DECLARED THAT THE NURSES HAD NOT IDENTIFIED THEMSELVES WITH THE NAZI IDEOLOGY WHICH CLASSED THE EXTERMINATION OF UNWORTHY LIVES AS EUTHANASIA.

    THE JUDGE RULED THAT THE VERDICT WAS NOT A SATISFACTORY VIEW OF WHAT HAD HAPPENED, BUT THE COURT WAS FORCED TO GIVE HE ACCUSED THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT.
