  • Description

West German political leaders, headed by President Gustav Heincmann and Chancellor Willy Brandt, led the nation in mourning today (12 April) for former President Heinrich Luebke, who died last Thursday.

Citizens of the West German Federal Capital joined the political leaders in filing past the closed coffin as it lay in state in Bonn's thousand-year-old minster church.

Dr. Luebke will be buried on Friday (14 April) in the Westphalian village of Enkhausen, where he was born 77 years ago, son of a local cobbler. On Thursday, a memorial service is being held in the Bonn Parliament, followed by a requiem mass in Cologne Cathedral.
