  • Description

Cypriots went to the polls on Sunday (5th July) in the first General Election to be held on Cyprus since the island's independence was granted ten years ago.

Elections were to have been held five years ago, but were delayed because of continued rifts between the Greek and Turkish communities. This weekend they voted separately, although no violence was reported during the campaigning.

Of an estimated 630 thousand Cypriots, 263 thousand have registered as Greek voters and 63 thousand have enrolled as Turks. The Greeks were electing 35 representatives, and the Turks 15.

The Turkish representatives successful in the Elections will work alongside a further team of 15 from the Communal Chamber to administer the Turkish community. The elected candidates will all be Independents, but there are 5 parties contesting the Greek seats as well as Independents. Four of the parties support President Archbishop Makarios, but the fifth.....the minority Democratic National Party.....is regarded as the official opposition, and supports union with Greece.
