SYNOPSIS: Members of Arab chambers of commerce and agriculture met in Baghdad on Saturday with economic cooperation high on the congress agenda. Delegates came from all Arab Countries as well as the Council of Arab Economic Unity and the Secretariat of the Arab League. In a statement read by the Iraqi Minister of Industry, President Al-Bakir stressed the importance of the meeting--and of achieving solidarity through economic relations.

The political economy of Iraq is founded in socialism--a policy which seemed to be underlined by the number of representatives from foreign trade unions attending the congress as observers. Among the countries represented were East Germany, Poland, Spain and Yugoslavia. They were told that social standards--as well as economic policies were urgent national needs in Gulf countries.

The Chairman of the congress and head of the Iraqi delegation, Said Sha'ban Jasim, said the power of every Arab country depended on a solid economic base free of foreign monopolies.

And, echoing this view, the delegate from the Council of Economic Unity pledged that the organisation would do everything possible to enlarge the Arab market.
