Background: Italian Caesare Scotti -- in a boat of his own design -- took the prestige Embassy Grand prix in Bristol, U.K. Over the weekend (8th and 9th June).

Scotti took the prize from last year's winner, Renato Molinari from Italy, on Sunday. Scotti sped round the course at an average speed of 75 miles an hour (121 kms an hour), powered by an Evinrude V6 engine.

The overall second position in the Formula One race was taken by Briton Peter Throneywork, in a Miles Johnson V6. Tom Percival, also from the U.K. took third position, driving a Molinari Mercury T3.

British drivers were also prominent in the Formula Two race on Sunday. Fred Oram, in a Mercury powered Courgar, won the race easily, with Fellow-Briton Tony Williams in second place. Their competition was stiff, with seventy boats, drawn from eight nations, vying for the prize.

Safety precautions were rigid for the tow-day event. Fourteen rescue boats, a dozen drivers, and ten ambulances stood by in case of accident. The course was ringed with safety barriers, and all safety stations were linked by radio. They weren't needed -- there were few incidents to mar the events.

SYNOPSIS: It was a big day at Bristol Docks, in south west Britain, on Saturday. Seventy drivers, from eight nations, were in the city to compete for the prestige Embassy Grand Prix for power boat racing.

The first Formula Two race -- the second was held on Sunday -- got off to a flying start.

The Formula Two section was expanded to include the new OE class, and the race attracted a host of top drivers. Joop Raymakers , from Holland, dominated in a Molinari one thousand.

Andre Dierkx, from a Belgium, eventually came in fifth. Raymakers, hitting a average speed of sixty nine miles an hour, won the race, but the overall Formula Two winner was Briton, Fred Oram.

The big race of the weekend was the Formula One, which took place on Sunday. Last year's winner, Renato Molinari from Italy, was expected to face some tough competition for the prestige Grand Prix.

Italian Caesare Scotti -- driving a boat he designed and built himself -- sped round the three kilometer course at an average speed of almost eighty miles an hour. Two other Scotti boats were also entered in the race.

Hans Pelster, from Holland, in a Scotti Evinrude V6, was to take eleventh place, even though he took a tumble.

The Embassy Grand Prix is regarded as one of the world's top races, and a victory was bound to afford international mastery of the sport to the winner.

The Formula One boats were expected to reach speeds of up to a hundred miles an hour down the narrow course, and safety precautions were rigid for the two-day event.
