  • Description

Heavy fighting continues all over South Vietnam. In the northern part of the country, Communist forces keep up their pressure in the direction of Hue. Further south, at the approaches to Saigon, government troops meet stiff resistance as they try to push down strategic Highway 13 and relieve the besieged provincial capital of An Loc.

Artillery still plays a big part in the battles close to the old Imperial capital of Hue. Some South Vietnamese batteries have been firing 2000 rounds an hour. Casualties are reported heavy on both sides. In an effort to bolster civilian morale, the South Vietnamese authorities in some areas have laid out the bodies of enemy dead for villagers to see. Meanwhile the battle rages along Highway 13, the strategic roadway from Saigon to the Cambodian border. Government forces continue to press forward in an effort to relieve An Loc, the besieged provincial capital, but they are meeting stiff resistance. Infantry and supporting tanks run into fierce mortar and machine-gunfire. Progress so far is reported to be slow.
