    FRANCE'S PROTOTYPE ATOM BOMBER - A SUPERSONIC 'IMAGE IV' - CRASHED NEAR ORLEANS ON THURSDAY AFTER APPARENT TROUBLE WITH ONE OF THE TWIN JETS. FILM TAKEN AT BRAY EN VAL NEXT DAY SHOWS THE AFTERMATH OF A CRASH IN WHICH NO LIVES WERE LOST.

    THE CREW OF TWO ESCAPED BY EJECTOR SEAT BUT THE PILOT, A CAPTAIN, BROKE BOTH LEGS ON LANDING. THE OTHER OCCUPANT, A MAJOR, WAS UNHURT. OFFICIAL SOURCES SAID THE AIRCRAFT HAD BEEN FLYING FOR THREE YEARS AND HAD LOGGED 400 FLYING HOURS. IT CAME DOWN NEAR A FARM WHILE ON A FLIGHT FROM THE TEST CENTRE OF BRETIGNY, NEAR PARIS.

    FRENCH NUCLEAR STRIKE FORCE PLANS PROVIDE FOR AN INITIAL FORCE OF 50 MIRAGE IV PLANES CARRYING ATOMIC BOMBS. M. PIERRE MESSMER, ARMED FORCES MINISTER, TOLD DEPUTIES LAST MONTH THE STRIKE FORCE WOULD BE READY AT THE END OF THIS YEAR.
