  • Description

Thousands of people flocked to the southern Lebanon town of Nabatieh on Wednesday (22 January) to take part in the commemoration of the ancient Islamic festival of Ashura.

Ashura falls on the tenth day of the month of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and it is the day of remembrance for Imam Hussein, son-in-law of the prophet Mohammed.

Hussein was killed at the battle of Karbala -- in the north of what is now Iraq -- when he fought the despotic calif, Yazid, who was later deposed in a popular uprising.

Today, Hussein is remembered as a liberator at the time of Ashura. The festival -- during which the battle is re-enacted -- is staged mainly by the Chiah community in Lebanon, who consider the events depicted to be the renaissance of Islam.
