  • Description

As a background to the funeral of America's master Statesman John Foster Dulles, film shows distinguished Washington buildings where he encountered many triumphs, trials and tribulations during his career.

'Old Glory' flies at respectful half-mast above the Capital Building, home of American Congress and scene of many of Mr. Dulles's 'fights' to maintain his foreign policy.

In an ivy-covered wing of the Walter Reed Military Hospital he fought what was probably his greatest fight of all - against pain and eventual death. 71 year-old Mr. Dulles died in his sleep May 24 suffering from cancer and pneumonia.

He reigned supreme at the State Department. Taking office in 1953 when Mr. Eisenhower first became President. He maintained a firm grip on world affairs almost to the moment of his death.

A welcome visitor to occupants of the White House since representing President Woodrow Wilson at the Paris Peace Conferences 1919. He continued as an invaluable adviser. Even when suffering untold agonies President Eisenhower refused to accept his resignation until the last possible moment.

Flanked by an honour guard his body will lay in state in the Bethlehem Chapel of the National Episcopal Cathedral from May 26-27.

Immediately after service at the Cathedral May 27 his body will travel in official cortege down the long road to the Arlington National Heroes Cemetery, where President Eisenhower, representatives of the American people, and foreign dignitaries will pay their last respects to the Great American statesmen.
