Background: As sure a sign of Spring, in Japan, as the cherry blossoms are the Communist Rallies. Every year the banners come out, the processions take place, people push the police, and vice versa.
This Spring, during the third wave of the labour offensive, over five thousand postal service and communication workers clashed with two thousand police guarding the Central Post Office building. For two hours the employees listened to their leaders speeches, sang songs, and generally demonstrated against their employers.
These strikes are organised by the communist inspired Sohyo union. Eventually the rallies broke up without any injuries to the strikers or police, but with five members of the Sohyo being arrested.
