  • Description

A brawl erupted between rival hockey teams in Quebec City on Sunday (11 April) in which one players was hospitalised with severe concussion.

It took twenty policemen almost an hour to break up the fighting.

The provincial Justice Department is investigating the possibility of filing criminal charges, and one team president has denounced hockey violence.

At one point, every member of the two squads was fighting.

The hospitalised players was a member of the Quebec Nordics team. Since the incident the team has urged a cleanup of what it calls a dirty, mismanaged World Hockey Association.

The trouble began when a player from the rival Calgary Cowboys charged across the ice to bash a Nordics player with his hockey stick. He then punched the unconscious player several times. The Nordics say the injured man won't be playing again this season.

The Nordics have now asked police to lay criminal charges against the Cowboys' player.

The Nordics have also threatened to pull out of the remaining games unless the WHA meets its conditions. They want the Cowboys' player banned from hockey, and they want the WHA Vice-President, Bud Foyle, fried because they say he tolerates violence and is incompetent.
