  • Description

President Eyadema of Togo received a massive demonstration of support from more than 100,000 people in front of the Presidential Palace in Lome recently.

President Eyadema, a former Lieutenant-Colonel who came to power after an army backed coup in 1967, told the crowd that the armed forces would remain vigilant and would permit no subversion.

The army, he said, had taken power to establish unity and reconciliation amono the Togolese people following the failure of the civil government, and to release political prisoners and urge political exiles to return.

The President went on to say that the armed forces would not cling to power but that they could not stand aside from the country's affairs.

He also warned that foreign mercenaries had no place in Togo and would be crushed if they attacked the country.
