  • Description

Visnews filmed the demolition of three war-time radar towers at Bolton Hill, Dunkirk, Ken Jan 22. People living nearby were warned to open all windows and to stay in the rear of houses to lesson risk of blast damage as the 360 feet high towers came crashing to the ground.

Made redundant by the Air Ministry the towers were sold, by auction, to a scrap dealer for GBP3,500. In came the dealers wrecking crew with their acetylene cutters and explosive charges - out of existence went three bastions of Britain's anti-aircraft defence during World War II.

A fourth tower is being left standing. Taken over by the United States Air Force in Britain it will be strengthened and used in connection with Micro-Wave Radio Communications Links.
