  • Description

THE FRENCH-SPEAKING PROVINCE OF QUEBEC WAS IN MOURNING YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) AS THE BODY OF ITS PREMIER, MR. DANIEL JOHNSON, LAY IN STATE IN THE LEGISLATURE BUILDINGS IN QUEBEC CITY. MR. JOHNSON DIED THURSDAY (26 SEPTEMBER) FROM A HEART ATTACK. HE WAS 53.

MR. JOHNSON'S BODY, IN AN ELABORATE CASKET, WENT ON PUBLIC DISPLAY AT NOON YESTERDAY IN THE LEGISLATIVE CHAMBER WHERE HE HAD HELD A SEAT FOR 22 YEARS. HE HAD BEEN PREMIER SINCE 1966.

AN HOUR EARLIER, MR. JOHNSON'S WIDOW, REINE, HIS TWO DAUGHTERS AND HIS SON PRIVATELY PAID THEIR LAST RESPECTS.

ACTING PREMIER JEAN-JACQUES BERTRAND AND MEMBERS OF THE JOHNSON CABINET, FOLLOWED BY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY, JOINED MRS. JOHNSON AT HER HUSBAND'S CASKET.

BY MID-AFTERNOON YESTERDAY, MORE THAN 10,000 HAD FILED PAST THE CASKET TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS.

MR. BERTRAND ORDERED FIVE DAYS' MOURNING FOR THE LATE PREMIER AND SAID GOVERNMENT OFFICES AND MOST SCHOOLS WOULD CLOSE NEXT MONDAY (30 SEPTEMBER), THE DAY OF THE OFFICIAL FUNERAL SERVICE.

A FRENCH GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID TODAY (SATURDAY) THAT PRIME MINISTER MAURICE COUVE DE MURVILLE WOULD REPRESENT FRANCE AT MR. JOHNSON'S FUNERAL.
