Background: THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT TODAY (THURSDAY) AFFIRMED ITS READINESS TO ENTER THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET, PROVIDED ADEQUATE SAFEGUARD WERE AVAILABLE FOR COMMONWEALTH INTERESTS.

POSSIBLE BRITISH MEMBERSHIP OF THE COMMON MARKET WAS ONE OF THE POINTS CONTAINED IN THE QUEEN'S SPEECH AT THE FORMAL OPENING OF THE NEW PARLIAMENT TODAY.

THE QUEEN'S SPEECH ALSO CONTAINED A PLEDGE BY THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT TO CONTINUE ITS SUPPORT FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION, DESCRIBED BY THE QUEEN AS "A NECESSARY BASIS FROM WHICH TO PROMOTE GREATER STABILITY IN EAST-WEST RELATIONS."
REFERRING TO RHODESIA, THE QUEEN SAID THE GOVERNMENT WOULD CONTINUE ITS POLICY AIMED AT ENDING THE REIGN OF THE ILLEGAL REGIME AND OBTAINING A PEACEFUL AND CONSTITUTIONAL SETTLEMENT.

THE STATE OPENING CEREMONY, WITH ALL ITS POMP AND PAGEANTRY WAS SEEN ON TELEVISION IN BRITAIN AND EUROPE FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE SPEECH WAS DELIVERED IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS BECAUSE CENTURIES OLD TRADITION FORBIDS THE MONARCH FROM ENTERING THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS WERE SUMMONED TO THE HOUSE OF LORDS BY THE BLACK ROD AT THE QUEEN'S COMMAND.
