The third day of the 33rd World Table Tennis Championships in Calcutta, India, on Saturday (8 February), produced some exciting play in both the men's and women's team events.

In the women's Corbillion Cup tournament, South Korea's Lee Ailesa lived up to her position as the sixth-ranked player in the world by resoundingly defeating the U.S.S.R.'s Svetlana Fedrova. Miss Lee and her team-mate Chin Hyun played brilliantly to secure Cup-holder South Korea's unbeaten place at the top of their group to qualify for the four-team final play off.

In the men's Swaythling Cup, cup-holder Sweden could only manage second place in their group to qualify for the finals. Kjell Johansson -- second-ranked, and the "hammer" of the 1973 Championships in Yugoslavia -- picked up some ground by defeating South Korea's Lee Sang Kuk, but earlier surprise defeats meant that Sweden's hopes of retaining the championship looked poor. Czechoslovakia, the team at the head of Sweden's group, consolidated its lead when European Champion Milan Orlowski beat the U.S.S.R's Stanislav Gomozkov. Orlowski had produced some spectacular strokes against Swedish players earlier in the day to help Czechoslovakia to top place.

But the favourites for the Championships in both the men's and women's events remained China, whose teams are in first place in their respective leagues. The major challenge to the Chinese in the women's tournament comes from South Korea, also unbeaten so far. Czechoslovakia in the men's event, provides the greatest worry for the consistently excellent Chinese team.
