  • Description

SOUTH KOREA CELEBRATED ITS 16TH 'ARMED FORCES DAY' LAST WEEK WITH A MASS PARADE OF MILITARY MIGHT IN SEOUL. PRESIDENT CHUNG HEE PARK TOOK THE SALUTE AT AN IMPRESSIVE MARCH PAST. LEADING GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND FOREIGN DIPLOMATS ALSO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY.

THOUSANDS OF SOUTH KOREANS WATCHED A PARADE THAT WAS SPEAR-HEADED BY SQUADS OF COMBAT TROOPS. THEN CAME MOBILE HEAVY ARMOUR, INCLUDING TANKS, FOLLOWED BY ROCKETS AND MISSILES.

LAST THURSDAY'S PARADE MARKED THE 16TH ANNIVERSARY OF ARMED FORCES DAY. SOUTH KOREA'S ARMED FORCES NOW STAND AT ABOUT 600,000, COMPARED WITH ABOUT 47,000 AT THE TIME OF THE REPUBLIC'S FOUNDING IN 1948, AND 115,000 AT THE OUTBREAK OF THE KOREAN CONFLICT IN 1950.
