The Peking International Swimming and Diving Friendship Invitational Meet was successfully inaugurated in the Capital Indoor Stadium in Peking on the evening of August 2nd.
The Peking International Swimming and Diving Friendship Invitational Meet was successfully inaugurated in the Capital Indoor Stadium in Peking on the evening of August 2nd. Friends from swimming circles in 23 countries and regions attended the opening ceremony.
Attending the opening ceremony were Chinese Vice-Premier Chen Hsi-Lien of the State Council, Vice-chairman Li Su-wen of the Standing committee of the National people's Congress and Minister Chuang Tse-tung in Charge of the Physical Culture and Sports Commission.
Leaders, deputy leaders and delegates of the participating countries and regions and an observer attended the opening ceremony.
Sarin Chhak, Minster of Foreign Affairs of the Royal Government of National Union of Cambodia, and diplomatic envoys of various countries to China were also present.
In an opening speech, Li Ching-chuan, Chairman of the organizing committee, declared: "It is our belief that with the common effort of all our friends, the invitational meet will play a positive role in strengthening the friendship and unity among the peoples and sportsmen of the developing countries and in promoting the sport of swimming in these areas." He wished the need every success.
The next speaker was Burmese swimmer Nanda Kyaw Zwar who spoke on behalf of the swimmers and divers participating in the current meet. He said: "We travelled to this great country from many miles to open up new frontiers that will ??? lead to unity among countries here represented. We are separated by vast bodies of water. Let water, therefore, unite us ... the water in our arena of friendly competitions."
