  • Description

Gala days in the Industrial North of England are days of feasts and festivals; they often coincide with the worker's holidays, and there are processions of merrymaking crowds, speeches, and of course the band plays.

Russian Miner Pavel Podjarov, and Michael Chudovsky, met a couple of typical bandsmen - and decorated them! - when they visited the Northumberland Miners Gala at Bedlington, just outside Newcastle.

Prominent in the parade which wound its way through this typical North Country small town on the mouth of the River Elyth were the banners and flags of the Miners' Lodges - branches of the Miners' Unions. Some of them, beautifully fashioned in light coloured silks embroidered with patterns and badges signifying the district and the trade, are up to fifteen feet square, and are carried aloft by six men. These banners appear whenever the Lodges meet or take part in a procession.
