  • Description

AT WILLIAMTOWN, NEAR NEWCASTLE RECENTLY, AUSTRALIA'S FIRST GUIDED WEAPON AIR DEFENCES BECAME OPERATIONAL. A SQUADRON OF SUPERSONIC BLOODHOUND ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILES WAS RECEIVED BY THE MINISTER FOR AIR, MR FAIBAIRN, ON BEHALF OF THE R.A.F.

THE MINISTER SAID THE BLOODHOUNDS COULD DESTROY ANY AIRCRAFT FLYING TODAY. THEY COULD BE PART OF AUSTRALIA'S FRONT LINE DEFENCES FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS.

THE MISSILES ARE GUIDED BY HIGH POWERED RADAR AND CAN HOME ON TO ATTACKING AIRCRAFT AT EXTREME ALTITUDES. THEY FLY ALONG REFLECTED RADAR SEAMS TO DESTROY THEIR TARGET. SPECIALLY TRAINED MEN IN THE NEW SQUADRON CAN EQUIP AND MOUNT THE WEAPONS IN A MATTER OF MINUTES.

DETAILS OF THE BLOODHOUNDS' PERFORMANCE ARE STILL SECRET, BUT IT IS BELIEVED THEY CAN FLY AT SPEEDS ABOVE FOURTEEN HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR. THE WEAPONS ARE DESIGNED TO PROTECT HEAVY INDUSTRIAL AREAS ALONG THE NEW SOUTH WALES COAST. AN EARLY WARNING SYSTEM OPERATES FROM AS FAR AWAY AS BROOKVALE AND PRECISE RADAR PINPOINTS THE TARGET.

THE CHIEF OF THE BRITISH COMPANY MANUFACTURING THE WEAPONS, MR HIGGINSON, TOLD THE MINISTER, THE BLOODHOUND WAS ONE OF THE MOST DEADLY ANTI-AIRCRAFT WEAPONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.
