  • Description

MR.CHOU EN-LAI, THE CHINESE PRIME MINISTER, SPENDING HIS SIXTH DAY IN THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TURNED TOURIST.

HE VISITED THE PYRAMIDS AND THE SPHINX, STROKED A CAMEL, AND AFFABLY CHATTED AWAY TO TOURIST GUIDES.ALTHOUGH THE WALKING AND CLIMBING WAS OBVIOUSLY TIRING THE 65 YEAR-OLD CHINESE PREMIER, HE NEVER CEASED TO SMILE AND WAS ALWAYS PREPARED TO POSE FOR THE ENORMOUS CROWD OF PHOTOGRAPHERS FOLLOWING HIM EVERYWHERE.

SITTING ON A TERRACE AT THE FOOT OF THE GREAT PYRAMID, THE CHINESE PRIME MINISTER AND HIS PARTY SAW ABDEL NAWI FAYED, A 37 YEAR-OLD EGYPTIAN, RACE UP THE 480 FOOT SIDE (146 METRES).IT TOOK HIM FOUR MINUTES AND 30 SECONDS.PAUSING AT THE TOP OF A QUICK WAVE TO MR.CHOU EN-LAI, FAYED RACED DOWN AGAIN IN TWO MINUTES 30 SECONDS.PERSPIRING FREELY, BUT SHOWING NO OTHER SIGNS OF STRESS, HE TOLD MR.CHOU EN-LAI THAT HIS BEST TIME WAS SIX MINUTES FOR BOTH ASCENT AND DESCENT.THE ASTONISHED AND ADMIRING CHINESE LEADER PRESENTED HIM WITH A FOUNTAIN PEN.

THE CHINESE PRIME MINISTER THEN POSED FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS IN FRONT OF A CAMEL.HE GINGERLY PATTED IT BUT REFUSED AN INVITATION TO SIT ON ITS BACK.

HE THEN LEFT BY CAR FOR PRESIDENT NASSER'S KUBBEH PALACE WHERE HE SPENT THE EVENING IN A FOUR-HOUR SESSION OF TALKS WITH THE U.A.R.PRESIDENT.THESE WERE THE LAST OF THE SCHEDULED TALKS BETWEEN THE TWO LEADERS, BUT THEY MET AGAIN TODAY (FRIDAY).A JOINT COMMUNIQUE IS EXPECTED TOMORROW.
