Background: AS ALGERIA SEETHED WITH RUMOURS THAT PRESIDENT DE GAULLE WAS ABOUT TO ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR ITS INDEPENDENCE, THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE ALGERIAN PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT, BEN YOUSSEF BEN KHEDDA, FLEW INTO TUNIS FOR TALKS WITH HIS CABINET.

THE ALGERIAN LEADER RETURNED FROM MOROCCO ON FEBRUARY 2 - FLYING A ROUNDABOUT ROUTE VIA MADRID AND FRANKFURT TO AVOID CROSSING THE FRENCH CONTROLLED ALGERIAN TERRITORY. HE WAS GREETED AT THE AIRPORT BY MR. LAGHDAM, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE TUNISIAN COUNCIL; MR. MEHIRI, TUNISIAN MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR; AND MR. YAZID, MINISTER OF INFORMATION IN THE ALGERIAN PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT.

WHILE THE MAIN TOPIC OF SPECULATION IS HOW AND WHEN FRANCE WILL GRANT ALGERIA ITS INDEPENDENCE, OBSERVERS ARE ALSO WONDERING WHO WILL LEAD THE ALGERIANS ONCE THE SEVEN YEAR STRUGGLE BETWEEN FRENCH TROOPS AND THE FLN REBELS IS FINALLY SETTLED, MR. BEN KHEDDA IS REGARDED AS LIKELY TO RECEIVE ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL POSITIONS, BUT NOT NECESSARILY THE TOP POST.

ONLY TWO ISSUES ARE BELIEVED TO NOW DIVIDE THE ALGERIANS AND FRENCH IN THEIR SECRET TALKS ON THE FUTURE OF ALGERIA. ONE IS THE STATUS OF ITS PRESENT EUROPEAN SETTLERS AFTER INDEPENDENCE; THE OTHER THE ORGANISATION OF A TRANSITION BETWEEN A CEASE FIRE AND FORMAL SELF DETERMINATION.
