  • Description

Argentina....and in Buenos Aires on Saturday (8 April) thousands of people queued for hours to get the chance of buying tickets for World Cup soccer games.

SYNOPSIS: Tickets for games had been on sale for weeks before -- but only on a block-booking basis for a complete series of matches. The state organising committee, EAM 78 realised that some people just could not afford the price of buying block tickets while others only wanted to see just one game. So, On Saturday, for the first time, tickets were sold for individual matches -- with this kind of response from people.

The queue stretched for four blocks and tailed back from Buenos Aires Central Bank -- the only place selling the tickets. Staff inside the bank will have to cope with demand for more than three-quarters of a million tickets -- that is the number that went on sale. They are the ones that have been left after the block-booking sales of earlier weeks.

Most of the tickets on sale for the 39-match series are at the cheeper end of the price range. Tickets for the opening game on June the 1st between the Cup holders West Germany and Poland, cost between 55 dollars and nine dollars, while prices for the final are slightly higher, between 71 dollars and 11 dollars.

Ticket sales have been heaviest for the two stadiums in Buenos Aires. That is where the home team, the Argentine, are playing, along with two other teams that also have strong local support -- Spain and Italy.
