  • Description

There has been a new wave of political bombings in Italy. Five political and commercial centres in Rome were attacked on Saturday night (27 May) following attacks there in Padua and Pisa the previous night.

SYNOPSIS: One of Saturday night's attacks in Rome was on the fla of an official in the secretariat of the Italian Prime Minister, Signore Giulio Andreotti. No-one was hurt in the blast, but the flat itself was seriously damaged. The bomb also put the building's lift out of action.

A group calling itself the "armed proletariats" claimed responsibility for the bombing. Police said the bomb appeared to be a home-made device.

Another target on the same night was the headquarters of the neo-fascist M.S.I., or Social Movement Party. Although the "armed proletariat" group did not claim responsibility for this bombing, it followed the pattern of attacks by right and left-wing extremist groups which have continued sporadically for several weeks.

Another of Saturday's five bombings was at a perfumery shop in Rome. Again, no-one was hurt but damage was costly. Other targets were the headquarters of the Christian Democratic Party and a police car. The night before, far-left extremists claimed responsibility for attacks on private cars in Rome and Pisa, and on an Alfa Romen showroom in Padua. For them, as for the Rome Perfume shop, there was little to do but clean up and hope the violence would end.
