Background: United States and South Vietnamese forces continued their offensive against the Viet Cong in Cambodia yesterday (Saturday) with casualties on both sides rising. A military spokesman in Saigon said the Viet Cong had lost more than 500 dead, while American and South Vietnamese forces suffered only 16 dead and 42 wounded.
The United States forces are attacking an area known as the "Fish Hook"... claimed by President Nixon to house the High Command of the Viet Cong. South Vietnamese troops have launched their attack further to the south.
The pattern of the fighting has become all to familiar. The American troops have met only isolated resistance and its seems the Viet Cong would rather draw fire and then vanish than stand and fight.
However the main American command post for the offensive in the Fish Hook has been shelled twice by the Viet Cong. The United States say only light casualties have been caused.
American bombers continue to plaster the area around the alleged Viet Cong command post, but until the ground forces have moved into the area the extent of the bombardment wont be determined.
