    Mr Melvin Laird arrived in Tokyo on Sunday (4 July) to become the first United States Secretary of Defence to ever visit Japan. He will confer with Government leaders as well as visit Japanese military units in Northern and Western Japan during his week-long stay.

    His visit is at the invitation of Japanese Defence Agency Director Yasuhiro Nakasone, who met Mr Laird in Washington last September and proposed closer security and defence consultations at ministerial level between the two countries.

    Mr Laird will leave Tokyo on July 11 for South Korea.

    SYNOPSIS: Mr Melvin Laird arrived in Tokyo on Sunday to become the first United States Secretary of Defence event??? visit Japan. He will be holding talks with Government leaders and visiting Japanese military units during his week-long visit.

    Mr Laird was invited to visit Japan last September when the Director of Japan's Defence Agency, yasuhiro Nakasone, proposed closer security and defence consultations between the Untied States and Japan...he and his wife greeted Mr & Mrs Laird at the airport on Sunday.

    The Defence Secretary is expected to discuss Far East security problems with Government leader, particularly since the strategic American-held island of Okinawa is being returned to Japan next year. His visits to Japan's military units in the north and west of the country are believed to be motivated by Mr Laird's desire to study the extent of Japan's military build-up for its self-defence.
