  • Description

Oscar Kambona, the former Tanzanian Minster for External Affairs, who is being tried in his absence in Tanzania, was interviewed in London on Tuesday (May 12). Mr. Kambona is charged with plotting to overthrow the Government.

Eight people, including Mr. Kambona, have been committed for trial in Tanzania on a charge of treason. It is alleged that they plotted between July 1968 and September 1969, to overthrow the Government of Dr. Julius K. Nyerere. It is Tanzania's first treason trial and the charge carries the maximum penalty of death. Mr. Kambona has lived, in voluntary exile, in London since he resigned from President Nyerere's Cabinet in 1967.
