Al Baath newspaper, organ of the ruling arab socialist party, affirmed today that Syria and other arab countries were ready to repulse forcefully any israeli attack, the newspapers' comment came amid reports that the tense situation which prevailed in the middle east over the past week had eased. The paper said Israel's calling up of reservists and the placing of israeli troops in a state of full alert as the "stepping up of the israeli campaign of misleading propaganda on a syrian attack are only meant to serve as a cover up to justify an impending israeli aggression against Syria." This aggression is aimed at subjugating this steadfast arab country in the face of all aggressive designs and liquidating the situation in the region in Israel's interest" it added.

Eewever the look of Damascus streets has never changed all along the "crisis" and soldiers on leave were seen as numerous as before. No official comments were released on the situation. President Al Assad who was due to make an important speech two days age at the end of the celebrations of the "corrective movement" which brought him to power, did not appear in public Diplomatic sources here believed this was not to give way to "israeli provocations" and ignore rather than tease the tension.

The question mark remains on whether Syria would renew or not the mandate of the UN observation force which expires at the end of the month. A french reading lebanese newspaper affirmed today that Syria was using the delay to put pressure on the US and obtain the resumption of the Geneva conference. It added that they would finely renew the mandate Nut for a much shorter period one month instead of six.
